Schaumburg Sister Cities Commission donated traditional apparel to Heritage Farm at Spring Valley
The Schaumburg Sister Cities Commission donated traditional Schaumburg, Germany apparel May 10 to Volkening Heritage Farm at Spring Valley, 201 S. Plum Grove Road. Jürgen Watermann, president of Schaumburger Deutsch-Amerikanische Gesellschaft (SDAG), the visiting German Sister Cities organization, presented the items to Schaumburg Park District staff during a visit to the Farm.
The donation included two Schaumburg Oesterten outfits worn north of Schaumburg, Germany for special occasions including church, holidays and Sundays. The special clothing would also be worn by older women and widows for marriage. A handmade costume, one of the two donated, was owned by Engel Marie Sophie Tegtmeier and dates mostly from 1925-1935.
The apparel is now on display in the Farm Visitor Center.
