Glen Ellyn Rotary Support Hungry Senior for Another Year

The Rotary Foundation of Glen Ellyn recently donated $800 to the Humanitarian Service Project (HSP) to sponsor a needy senior enrolled in their Senior Citizen Project (SCP). The $800 donation will provide a needy senior in SCP with a full year sponsorship. Therefore, the senior will receive a monthly delivery of 100 lbs. of groceries and paper products right to their door.

The Rotary Club of Glen Ellyn was sponsored by the Oak Park Rotary Club and chartered in 1943. After several years, the Rotary Club of Glen Ellyn sponsored the West Chicago Rotary Club in 1954 and the Wheaton Rotary Club in 1957. The Glen Ellyn Rotary Club's president is Patrick Schauer. The Glen Ellyn Rotary Club has 37 members. The International Rotary Club boasts 1.2 million members of all different backgrounds, cultures and ethnicities. The international groups of Rotary Clubs focus on community service projects that address many of today's most critical issues such as: children at risk, poverty and hunger, the environment, illiteracy, and violence. The Glen Ellyn Founders Club is the charitable division of the Glen Ellyn Rotary Club. Currently, the foundation's president is Scott Park. The Glen Ellyn Rotary Club has supported HSP since 2005.

The Rotary Foundation of Glen Ellyn raised the money through a Christmas sale. The foundation sold cases of oranges during the 2012 holiday season. At the end of December, the foundation sold over 1,000 cases of oranges. The foundation then donated the proceeds to 23 different organizations throughout the area. One of those 23 organizations was HSP. HSP will use the funds for sponsorship of a senior in SCP.

The SCP is a project that is concentrated on helping 121 seniors who live in severe poverty in the Kane and DuPage County area. The seniors in the SCP are impoverished and cannot be helped financially by their families. On top of being unsupported financially, they often have medical conditions which prevent them from being mobile. All of the seniors in the program are severely impoverished, and buying groceries that are beneficial to their health is out of the question. These deliveries enable the seniors to maintain a healthy diet and hygiene.

The purpose of the SCP is to alleviate the physical and psychological effects of poverty by removing the concern over how they will be able to afford to eat healthily. The needy seniors sponsored through the donation will receive a selection of 15 nourishing fruits and vegetables, 7 varieties of frozen meats, 6 bags of non-perishable food, 3 loaves of Pepperidge Farm bread, 2 bags of paper products (paper towels, facial tissue, and toilet paper), delivered straight to their door every month. Also, every three months, the needy seniors receive a box of personal care items with their delivery including, shampoo, conditioner, a toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, lotion, soap, and hand sanitizer. The 121 impoverished seniors in HSP's Senior Citizen Project also receive a monthly “Secret Pal” gift, gifts at Christmas time, and much needed household items on their “wishlist.” The program provides the seniors the opportunity to maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle, in the face of the financial and health burdens they face.

About The Humanitarian Service Project:

HSP's mission is to alleviate the pain and suffering that poverty creates in seniors and children living in DuPage and Kane Counties, Illinois. Last year during the Christmas Offering, 1,636 children received gifts and 150 impoverished families received three weeks of groceries, frozen meats, and fresh produce. With the Senior Citizen Project, HSP provides monthly food deliveries of 100 pounds including fresh produce, frozen meats, non-perishables, paper products and secret pal gifts to 121 low-income seniors. The Children's Birthday Project reaches the youngest underprivileged, making birthdays and Christmas truly memorable occasions for 900 children. Feed the Kids program provides 100 low-income families with groceries and fresh produce. HSP conducts an annual school supplies drive, which sends supplies to the DuPage Back to School Fair in addition to furnishing schools and individual children with necessary supplies.
