Barrington overcomes tough challenge

Barrington appeared to be letting another winnable game slip away late in Friday's Mid-Suburban West boys basketball finale at Schaumburg.

But senior Bryan Wegner and sophomore John Schneider scored the Broncos' final 10 points in their first successful trip to Schaumburg in 19 years with a 40-36 victory.

"We wanted to prove we can play the whole game and finish them off," said Schneider.

Wegner had 14 of his 16 points in the second half and 9 rebounds as the Broncos (13-12, 4-6) ended a 10-game losing streak to the Saxons.

Schaumburg (12-10, 5-5), which missed 18 of its first 19 shots and hit only 25 percent, got two 3s from Joe Infusino to cap a 10-0 run for a 33-30 lead with 3:02 left.

"We got a little tentative and had to relax and get our focus back," Wegner said.

Wegner hit a free throw and Schneider picked off a midcourt pass and stormed in for a tying two-hand dunk at 2:11.

"I struggled a lot early in the season with getting up in the passing lanes," said Schneider, who had 10 points. "I've put in the extra effort in practice."

Barrington went ahead for good when Schneider got a layup at 1:37 off a backdoor feed from Wegner, who hit 5-of-6 free throws in the last 38 seconds and the clincher with one second left.

"The kids didn't fold and it says a lot about their character," said Broncos coach Bryan Tucker of a game tied at 12-12 at halftime.

Infusino's 3 at 0:16 got the Saxons within 37-36 but Javon McDonald's 3 for a tie missed at 0:02. Declan Geraghty led the Saxons with 15 points.

"I thought we stayed together but we didn't finish the game," said Saxons coach Matt Walsh.
