Wheeling Twp. programs serve senior citizens

Senior citizens face a variety of challenges as they age - from increasing health concerns to giving up the keys to the car.

One of the biggest decisions for our senior population is whether to remain in their home, and for how long. For some, staying at home is important because it is a cherished and familiar place, while for others it is due to the substantial costs of moving into a retirement community or assisted living facility.

Whatever the reason, aging in place requires planning, knowledge of available support services and forward thinking. As part of its long-standing goal to serve the community, Wheeling Township offers a range of services for seniors so they can remain as independent as possible, for as long as possible.

"A wide variety of services and referrals are available for seniors through the township," said Wheeling Township Supervisor Kathleen Penner. "We know that sometimes it's the little things that can have a big impact on seniors' lives, and we are dedicated to being of assistance to our older residents."

Programs and services available to seniors living in Wheeling Township include:

Assessor's Office

Seniors may apply for and/or update senior citizen exemptions and the Senior Freeze. Senior veterans may also apply for Veterans with Disabilities exemptions. Call the Assessor's Office at (847) 259-1515 or email taxinfo@wheelingtownship.com.

General Assistance

Seniors who are challenged with financial constraints can meet with the township's General Assistance Department to determine their eligibility for a number of assistance programs, including the township Food Pantry, Mobile Dental Clinic (reduced cost basic dental care), SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program), and Emergency Assistance, which provides help with other financial hardships.

For information, call (847) 259-7730 or email GA@wheelingtownship.com.

Transportation

Independence is the key when seniors are aging in place, and the township's Transportation Department offers just that. Providing more than 20,000 rides annually, the department provides rides for seniors over 60 years of age to medical appointments, the grocery store, hair salons, restaurants and more.

In addition to seniors, disabled residents older than 18 are also eligible to use this transportation service for a nominal charge of $2 each way.

For information about the township's Transportation Program, call (847) 259-7743, or email JMessina@wheelingtownship.com.

"We provide a crucial link for residents who are no longer driving, are in wheelchairs, or would otherwise be unable to easily and safely get around," Penner said. "Our drivers are compassionate and caring, which is the heart of this program's success."

Home Delivered Meal Program

Nutrition is also important for seniors to remain healthy and independent. Through the township's Home Delivered Meal Program, hot and freshly prepared meals are delivered around lunchtime Monday through Friday by a friendly volunteer, right to the front door of the recipient.

For residents who qualify, this service is available for $7.50 a day. Participation in the program is subject to availability on a route.

Call (847) 259-7730, ext. 19, or email HomeDeliveredMeals@wheelingtownship.com for information.

Support Groups

For seniors living with the challenges of low vision, or for those who find themselves serving as a caregiver for a loved one with Alzheimer's, the township offers two support groups that meet monthly on Zoom. Both groups allow members to share ideas, listen to guest speakers, socialize and offer each other support.

For information, call (847) 259-7730, ext. 21, or email LLahey@wheelingtownship.com.

Through its dedication to providing services to seniors, whether by helping them maintain their independence, sustain their health, or by offering critical assistance during times of need, Wheeling Township continues to make a significant difference in the community.
