Glenbrook South Transition student wins 'Yes I Can' award
Glenbrook South High School Transitions student Lauren Yim won the Illinois Chapter of the Council for Exceptional Children "Yes I Can" award.
The council recognizes students' determination and achievement in six categories: academics, arts, school and community activities, self-advocacy, technology and transition.
This is Yim's second time as a "Yes I Can" winner. In 2017, she won for academics. This year, as part of Glenbrook South's Transitional Services program, she won for transition.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, she worked as a greeter at a HomeGoods store, and since has moved on to Costco, where she sells food samples each business day, while also taking an English class at Oakton Community College.
Yim's job coach, Brian Ruder, called her conscientious and a positive role model, especially in terms of self-advocacy.
"We have yet to see Lauren have a bad day," Ruder said.
