Money has become an abstraction
Peter! Peter Roskam - Congressman from the sixth district. Why do you deny reality? I voted for you wholeheartedly in 2006, back when you took over the seat of the estimable Henry Hyde.
You were a conservative then, socially and fiscally, but now, like Brooks in Shawshank Prison, you have become "institutionalized." Sure, you're still pro-life, but you have forgotten the simple economics by which ordinary people live. You have been in Congress so long that money, to you, has become an abstraction.
Last year you voted to pass the Omnibus spending bill, fully funding Obamacare, and the president's egregious amnesty programs. You joined 166 Democrats in raising the federal debt ceiling by $1.2 trillion. What good is being pro-life if you are unwilling to defund Planned Parenthood? You criticize the IRS, but feed the monster on which that agency suckles.
As your view of money blurred, your principles turned to mush. A leader in the House, you have many balls to juggle now, and so have lost your own. You engage in give-and-take with kleptomaniacal Democrats, and meanwhile your base has turned elsewhere. Congress has more mirrors than Versailles; live in it too long, and you won't recognize yourself. I certainly don't recognize the Peter Roskam who tried on Henry Hyde's shoes.
On March 15th, I'm voting for Jay Kinzler.
