Elgin Symphony Orchestra performs Music for Strings concert Nov. 19
First United Methodist Church of Elgin will host the Elgin Symphony Orchestra's Music for Strings concert on Saturday, Nov. 19.
Matthew Sheppard will conduct this program, which includes Mendelssohn's String Symphony No. 10 in B minor, Elgar's "Serenade for Strings," Efraín Amaya's "Angelica," and Dvorák's "Serenade for Strings."
The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the church, 216 E. Highland Ave. in Elgin.
Awarded Conductor of the Year in 2022 by the Illinois Council of Orchestras, Sheppard is the artistic director of the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra, as well as the Hyde Park Youth Symphony, and the music director for the University of Chicago Chamber Orchestra and the Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company of Chicago. He has guest-conducted orchestras in North and South America.
For the 2022-23 season, Sheppard is the guest resident conductor at the Bienen School of Music, where he conducts the Northwestern Symphony Orchestra.
Tickets are $20 for adults. Students are $5. Youth age 17 and younger are free with a paying adult.

The Elgin Symphony Orchestra will kick off the holiday season with Holiday Brass & Percussion from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4, at St. Anne Catholic Community, 120 Ela St. in Barrington.
This free special holiday event will be presented at the Saint Anne Catholic community featuring members of the ESO Brass and Percussion sections. Make your free reservation at www.elginsymphony.org. The concert is sponsored by the Fran Houlihan family.
Celebrate the holidays with your favorite scenes from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker and other holiday favorites such as Leroy Anderson's Sleigh Ride and Christmas, all with the Elgin Symphony Orchestra and the Elgin Master Chorale. With any luck, we may have a special visitor from the North Pole as well.
The annual Holiday Spectacular, led by conductor Timothy Semanik, will be at 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, at the Raue Center for the Arts, 26 N. Williams St. in Crystal Lake, and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, at the Hemmens Cultural Center, 45 Symphony Way in Elgin. The Dec. 11 concert is sold out.
