National Hot & Spicy Day collab
There is a ‘National Day’ for practically everything, and Aug. 19 is National Hot & Spicy Day. Local hot chicken chain Fry the Coop is collaborating with two well-known Chicago brands — Italian deli J.P. Graziano and D'Amato's Bakery — for a one-day only sandwich.
The D'Coopziano features Fry the Coop's hot chicken seasoned with J.P. Graziano's dried giardiniera seasoning. It’s topped with Coop sauce, giardiniera and provolone on a fresh D'Amato's roll.
It will be available at all 10 Fry the Coop locations, including suburban outposts in Bolingbrook, Darien, Elmhurst and Prospect Heights, on Aug. 19 for $5.
More hot stuff
Dave’s Hot Chicken is bringing the heat to Schaumburg with its new location opening Friday, Aug. 14, at 1330 E. Golf Rd.
The eatery joins a lineup of seven other restaurants confirmed for the Crossroads of Schaumburg development, which include Piccolo Buco and CAVA (both now open), Lazy Dog, Velvet Taco, Crisp & Green, Panda Express and Naansense.
Offering a menu of crispy chicken tenders and sliders in seven heat levels, from no spice to reaper, plus sides and drinks, Dave’s will be open Sunday through Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to midnight.
Just what the Dr ordered
Dirty sodas are having a moment. Portillo’s says why not dirty shakes?
The iconic hot dog and beef shop is teaming up with Dr Pepper to launch a pair of new limited-time shakes. The Dr Pepper Shake mixes Dr Pepper into Portillo’s classic vanilla milkshake. And if that wasn’t enough, you can also make it a Dr Pepper Cake Shake, because why not.
Both should be available through September.

White Castle is bringing back one of its most popular deals on a sack of sliders.
Now through Aug. 23, Cravers (PR lingo for White Castle fans) can get 10 original sliders for $8.99.
The deal is available for dine-in, at the drive-through or through mobile ordering at participating Castles nationwide.
Brews with views
Sturdy Shelter Brewing in Batavia will unveil a new riverside deck this week along the Fox River.
The deck provides dog-friendly seating for 40, with both Adirondack chairs and table seating at which you can enjoy their variety of 18 tap beers, all brewed on site.
The brewery at 10 S. Shumway won a bronze medal in the 2024 World Beer Cup in the Munich-Style Dunkel category for their Wilson Street Dunkel.
