High Five: What’s ahead this week on the prep sports scene?
Last week we debuted the shifted High Five by looking at the week ahead in prep sports.
We keep up the momentum in this edition, focusing on the top events coming up in the busy spring season. And with May rapidly approaching, each is a good prep for the postseason.
Wheaton North at WW South boys volleyball, Tuesday
The Falcons may not have the postseason pedigree of WW South, which has seven state titles, but they are on a massive roll this season.
Behind all-tournament honorees Aidan Syswerda, Briggs Corona and Michael Forbes, Wheaton North won last week’s prestigious Tiger Classic with a title match victory over two-time defending state champion Marist.
WW South claimed the consolation crown behind Simon Bratt and Nate Paige. Both teams are unbeaten in the DuKane Conference.
Lake County girls track and field meet, Wednesday
Lake Zurich recently has dominated the Lake County girls meet, which will be hosted by Grayslake Central. The Bears ride a streak of seven straight North Suburban Conference outdoor titles, and won this year’s indoor title.
Twenty-one other schools will compete for the county title including Barrington, Zion-Benton and Warren, which finished second and third, respectively, in last year’s meet. Vernon Hills won this year’s indoor meet in the Central Suburban League North.
DuPage and Kane county girls track and field meets, Friday
Like with Lake County, the fastest and strongest from the western suburbs will gather for two more county events. The DuPage meet will be at WW South and the Kane meet at Kaneland.
And, like Lake County, it’ll provide a good gauge of what the conference meets will look like the next week.
Pitchford Invite boys tennis tournament, Saturday
Known as a mini-state tournament at Hersey High School, the Pitchford Invite casts one big question to the field. Can anyone slow four-time defending state champion Hinsdale Central?
With Barry Zhu in singles, and the doubles team of Nicholas Marringa and Kyle McCann, there’s no reason to doubt the Red Devils. But watch out for players from Barrington and the host Huskies weaving through the brackets.
DuKane Conference baseball on Friday, Saturday and Monday
We’re cheating a bit by bleeding into Monday, but it’s rivalry week in the DKC.
That means Wheaton North against WW South, St. Charles East vs. St. Charles North, Geneva and Batavia locking horns, and Glenbard North taking on Lake Park.
Batter up.
