Daily Herald photo contest winners for June 2025
Brad Hofbauer's autumnal photo of two people wandering around the remains of an old, abandoned coke plant on Chicago’s southeast side wins first place in the Daily Herald’s amateur photo contest for June. The Wheeling resident writes, “It is an interesting part of Chicago history and the sunsets here are magnificent.”
In second place is Mike Nielsen’s touching photo of two fawns competing to get some nourishment from mom. The Lisle resident writes, “I felt blessed to see this fawn nursing on its mother … Just wonderful!”
Third place goes to Jerry Peterson’s photo capturing a young girl striving to get a view of a total solar eclipse at a site near Carbondale. The Mount Prospect resident likes how the “Girls Rule the Galaxy” T-shirt speaks to the event.
Coming in fourth is Marilyn McNichols’ photo of a young deer spotted during a visit to The Grove, a 150-acre outdoor history and nature museum in Glenview. The Algonquin resident writes, “I love the natural, peaceful beauty of this photo.”
An honorable mention goes to Matthew Davis for this photo of a fierce, but slightly comical-looking eagle standing over its kill. The Elgin resident writes, “Although sightings are more common these days, seeing one will always make me pull over to admire.”
