Man faces heroin, fentanyl charges after police chase in Oak Brook
A Chicago man is being detained pretrial on charges he had more than 100 grams of illegal narcotics, including a heroin/fentanyl mix.
Kentrell Hayes, 25, of the 2400 block of West Grenshaw Street, was arrested Friday, according to a press release from the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office.
He is charged with manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance, a Class Super X felony; manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance, cocaine, a Class 1 felony; and aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer.
If convicted of the Super X charge, Hayes could be sentenced to nine to 30 years in prison.
The release said Westmont police stopped a Toyota Camry sedan on 63rd Street on a speeding accusation. When the officer got out of his squad, the car made a U-turn and drove west. Westmont stopped pursuing.
Later, Hinsdale police reported finding the car speeding north on Route 83 and notified Oak Brook police, according to the release. Oak Brook police tried to stop it around 1:40 a.m. with tire-deflating stop sticks, but the release said Hayes accelerated and got on to I-88, driving at speeds up to 95 mph. An Oak Brook officer stopped chasing because of debris flying off the Toyota and hitting his squad car. Another officer took over.
Hayes hit a barrier on the side of I-290, causing the hood of the car to flip onto his windshield, until he exited at Austin Boulevard and was arrested by Forest Park police.
Officers reported finding 108 bags containing heroin/fentanyl, weighing about 149 grams, plus about 2 grams of cocaine, and $1,620 in cash.
“This arrest is an excellent example of some of the underlying reasons offenders are fleeing from the police,” Oak Brook Police Chief Brian Strockis said in the release. “I’m quite sure this offender has fled from the police in other jurisdictions numerous times and got away with it.”
Court records state Hayes is on probation on a conviction for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.
