Illinois Mycological Association Display and Sale: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 1, at Chicago Botanic Garden, 1000 Lake-Cook Road, Glencoe. The show celebrates the richness of fall mushrooms in Illinois. Exhibits 50 to 100 varieties of mushrooms foraged from area forests in the days prior to the show. Members of the Illinois Mycological Association provide information and answer questions regarding mushrooms and fungi. Mushroom-related books, T-shirts and other items are for sale. Join the Garden Club of Lake Zurich for a program on “Owls of Lake County.” Learn how specialized feathers, beaks and talons help owls rule the food chain. Sept. 4

Growing Shiitake Mushrooms with Hunter LeDuc: 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, at Sycamore Public Library, 103 E. State St., Sycamore. The shiitake is an edible mushroom native to East Asia that is used in many dishes across the world. South Barrington Garden Club, “Incredible Bats”: 9 a.m. on the first Thursday of the month, South Barrington Tennis Club, 3 Tennis Club Lane, South Barrington. Tamara Block, a retired educator, will introduce the group to the career of Piet Oudolf, leader of the “New Perennial” movement in naturalistic garden design. Piet is the award-winning landscape architect behind the Lurie Garden in Millennium Park, Chicago, as well as the Battery and High Line Gardens in New York City. Rolling Meadows Garden Club — Caring for Dahlias and Other Tubers: 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, at the Rolling Meadows Community Center, 3705 Pheasant Drive, Rolling Meadows. “How To Care For Dahlias And Other Tubers Fall Through Winter.” Garden expert Ken Benson will discuss how to preserve your Dahlias, Cannas, Elephant Ears and Begonia tubers in fall through the winter, so they thrive year after year. Benson is a landscape architect and was the host of cable TV’s Landscaping with Ken Benson (1992-2000). He was also a board member of Chicago Flower and Garden Show 1998-2008. All welcome. Garden Club of Inverness Luncheon: On Thursday, Dec. 5, the Garden Club of Inverness will host its annual luncheon at Medinah Country Club, with the theme “Sleigh Bells Ring.” The event will feature a silent auction, Christmas crafts and a raffle, in addition to a presentation on floral arrangements for the holidays. Tickets will be on sale for $75 in September and one need not be a member to attend. Last year the luncheon sold out quickly and was able to fund three $3,000 scholarships for students interested in ecology and horticulture.
