Two more added to DuPage monument of officers who died on duty

Two more police officers who died in the line of duty were added to the roster of DuPage County’s fallen heroes on Monday.

Honored during a ceremony at the county complex in Wheaton were sheriff’s Deputies Gordon Leonard and Ralph Manning Hoy. They died in a car crash while taking a prisoner back to jail after an arrest on Sept. 27, 1929.

Leonard’s nephew Charles Bartsch and his wife, Madeleine, were in attendance and were presented with a ceremonial American flag by the sheriff’s department. The Bartsches live in West Chicago and reside in the home in which Leonard grew up.

“I know my husband Chuck was very proud of his uncles, and we’re honored to be here today, to have his name engraved on this monument of fallen police officers.” said Madeleine Bartsch.

Sgt. Edmond Moore of the sheriff’s department presented a ceremonial American flag to Charles and Madeleine Bartsch during the ceremony. And a wreath was presented by Sheriff John Zaruba.
