Habitat for Humanity announces June 2 Open House for New Home in Des Plaines

Spring of Life Partnership, a group of volunteers from seven Northwest suburban churches, has been building and rehabbing houses for Habitat for Humanity for 21 years. With the goal of providing top quality affordable housing, these homes are then sold, with an interest free mortgage to qualified first time homeowners. This year, the group built a new 1,600 square foot home in Des Plaines at 1419 Cora Street.

The homeowner is a single working mom who spent nearly every Saturday working beside the construction crew to make her dream of home ownership a reality.

A long-standing Habitat tradition is to host a community house blessing at the end of construction. To celebrate the completion of its 15th home, Spring of Life Partnership opens the home to the community at noon on Saturday, June 2, with the house blessing ceremony at 1 p.m.

Volunteers from seven Palatine and Arlington Heights churches: All Saints Lutheran, Holy Family Catholic Community, St. Paul United Church of Christ, Our Saviour's Lutheran, St. Edna Catholic Church, St. Theresa Parish and Southminster Presbyterian form the partnership and began this house last August. They were supported by donations from Des Plaines Bank and Trust, Feldco, Millennium Bank and The United State Alliance for Fire Protection.

Major support was also provided by members of St. Martin's Episcopal Church of Des Plaines, who provided many lunches to the Saturday volunteers and will prepare and serve refreshments at the June 2 House Blessing.
