National Library Week Celebration Begins Sunday

Prizes, movies, music and bird shows will all be included in the National Library Week Kick-off Celebration from noon to 3 p.m., Sunday, April 13 at the Schaumburg Township District Library, 130 S. Roselle Rd., Schaumburg. This year's theme is "Soar at Your Library." All of the events are free.

In the festively decorated lobby, library visitors will be welcome to spin the prize wheel, visit our general information table and meet some of the library trustees. Pianist Chris Martin will entertain with pop, country, standards and more throughout the afternoon. At 1 p.m., the movie "Up" (G) will be shown in the Audiovisual Theatre.

For children ages 7 to 14 and their parents or guardians, two presentations of "Flighted Hunters" will be held in the Rasmussen Room at 12:30 p.m. and 1:45 p.m. These free, 45-minute bird shows will feature birds of prey with their professional handlers from Save Our American Raptors (SOAR) Illinois. SOAR is a non-profit organization dedicated to the welfare of native birds of prey. Persons interested in attending must pick up their free tickets from the Youth Services Department 20 minutes prior to the show. Seats are limited.

For teens ages 12-19, the Fold and Fly Obstacle Course will be open from 1:30-2:30 p.m. during the kick-off celebration in Teen Place. Participants can design and fly paper planes through an obstacle course. Sample planes and books for choosing a design will be available. No registration required; just drop in. Throughout National Library Week, which concludes on Saturday, April 19, teens can enter the "Soar at Your Library" aeronautical trivia contest for a chance to win a $30 gift card to a local business.
