A one-day workshop "Horse Sense 101: Basics of Horse Ownership" is designed to help you make wise decisions prior to purchasing a horse or help you care for a horse you already own.
The event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9 at the Hooved Animal Humane Society, 10804 McConnell Road, Woodstock, IL, 60098
Topics will include:
Horse Ownership: What it takes to own a horse, benefits and responsibilities.
Caring for Your Horse: just the basics on nutrition, management, and physical conditioning for a healthy horse.
Finding Help: Choosing a boarding facility, trainer/ instructor, farrier, veterinarian, etc.
Bringing My Horse Home: What you need to know to establish your own facility and pasture.
Finding the Right Horse: Horse behavior and nature. How to select and purchase a horse.
What I wish I had known before I bought my horse: A panel of horse owners will share their experiences
Speakers include Dr. Kevin Kline, Extension Equine Specialist, Debra Hagstrom, Extension Equine Specialist, Ellen Phillips, Extension Educator from University of Illinois Extension and Dr. Patti Klein-Manke, Director of HAHS.
The workshop is co-sponsored by University of Illinois Extension (www.extension.uiuc.edu) and the Hooved Animal Humane Society (www.hahs.org).
Cost of the all-day workshop, including lunch is $30 per person, $50 for two people from the same household/stable, and $15 for each child under 18 years of age.
