Readers offer money, advice

Since the Daily Herald's "The Dream Foreclosed" series began Sunday, the newspaper has received numerous e-mails and phone calls from readers offering financial assistance for a family facing foreclosure, advice on where to live, and comments about the mortgage and housing industry.

Readers from Barrington, Wheeling, Algonquin, Lisle, Naperville, Roselle, Elk Grove Village and elsewhere wanted to help Melanie and Steven Fugate, who face a sheriff's auction of their Carol Stream home.

The Fugates are one example of the 6,662 households in the Northwest and West suburbs that have received foreclosure notices from January through September. Some readers wanted to provide financial assistance or holiday gifts to help lift the spirits of their children.

"I just cried," said Melanie Fugate when told about the offers.

Other readers offered comments about what to do if facing mortgage problems or about the industry in general. Stephen Calcari of Rolling Meadows, a 29-year mortgage industry veteran, said greed among some in the industry contributed to the foreclosure crisis.

"I wish I had some answers beyond fiscal responsibility for all parties involved. I thank you for your informative articles," Calcari said. "My hope is that they will make future homeowners think before taking on a dream that could turn into a nightmare."
