Briefs: Karaoke fundraiser tonight

The Young Professional Committee of the Arlington Heights Chamber of Commerce it holding its third annual Chamberaoke tonight at Trackside, 2200 W. Euclid Ave. The event from 6:30 to 9 p.m. will benefit the Northwest Community Hospital Foundation's Cancer Patient Assistance Fund, which provides emergency financial aid to families facing a battle with cancer. Chamberaoke is a karaoke-type event where prominent people in the community put themselves up for auction. The highest bidder gets to choose a song for that person to sing. Food and drinks are provided as well as the opportunity to win raffle prizes. The fee is $35 in advance and $50 at the door. Indian powwow today

The American Indian Center of Chicago's Trickster Gallery in Schaumburg will host a mini-powwow open to the public at 6:30 p.m. today. The gallery is located at 190 S. Roselle Road, just south of Schaumburg Road in Schaumburg's Town Square. The event serves as a preview of the American Indian Center's 54th annual powwow at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago Nov. 16 to 18. Cheer contest Sunday

The Schaumburg Athletic Association will host upward of 3,500 cheerleaders when more than 175 teams compete at Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates on Sunday. The teams come from all over the Northwest and West suburbs, and participants range in age from kindergarten to eighth grade. Called the Schaumburg Spirit Spectacular, the contest is expected to run from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. in a "dual-floor" format. Admission is $6; parking is free.

Tax appeal advice

The Schaumburg Township assessor's office will host a seminar on how to appeal your property assessment at 7 p.m. Nov. 15 at township hall, 1 Illinois Blvd. in Hoffman Estates. To reserve a seat, call the assessor's office at (847) 884-0030. Assessor John Lawson said his office has been fielding questions from taxpayers and taxing bodies for several months regarding the lateness of the state Senate-approved property tax plan. Lawson reported that with the break of the impasse, his office now can begin assisting taxpayers to appeal their new assessments once they're mailed out.
