Briefs: Wheeling getting cameras

The Wheeling village board gave approval Monday to install red-light cameras in town. They'll be put up at six intersections: Milwaukee Avenue and Hintz Road, Milwaukee and Dundee Road, Lake-Cook Road and Northgate Parkway, Dundee and Elmhurst Road, Elmhurst and Hintz Road, and Palatine Expressway and Wheeling Road. The board also approved procedures for impounding cars involved in offenses such as driving under the influence or driving without a valid license. The owner would have to pay $500 to get the vehicle back. The village also added an administrative hearing officer to handle the impoundment and red light camera cases in town instead of having them go to circuit court.

Fire breaks out in attic

An attic fire in Hoffman Estates caused about $150,000 damage to a home Tuesday and left it uninhabitable. The fire department responded to the scene around 4 p.m. and found moderate smoke coming from the roof of the home at 575 Bode Road. All residents had already left the house, and the fire was contained to the attic. A firefighter also suffered a minor injury but was treated and released. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to the department. The Hoffman Estates Fire Department was assisted by the Streamwood, Elk Grove Village, Barrington and Palatine Rural departments.
