Car crashes into Itasca trustee's building

Itasca Trustee Mike Latoria got some bad news Tuesday while attending parent-teacher conferences.

But it had nothing to do with his child's grades.

Around 5 p.m., Latoria was called to the building he owns in Wood Dale because a car crashed through the door.

Rescue officials wouldn't identify the driver but said she was not injured. No one was inside the building at the time.

Latoria owns Latoria Brothers Construction at 355 E. Potter St. and he leases the unit next door to Millenium Marble at 357 E. Potter.

Latoria, reached on his cell phone Tuesday evening, said a Honda Pilot crashed into the masonry between the front doors to both businesses, rendering the building uninhabitable.

"It's a mess," he said. "Thank God no one was hurt, but my building is shot," he said.

"She (the driver) wiped out the front doors and everything in between," Latoria added. "So the city says I have to shore it up before we can occupy it again."

Wood Dale Deputy Police Chief Greg Vesta said the driver was leaving the parking lot when the accident occurred.

"She thought the car was in reverse," Vesta said. "But when she hit the gas, the car was in drive and she hit the front door with low impact."
