Hanover Park plans to build area's first wind turbine

In case you haven't heard, Hanover Park is on its way to becoming the first Chicago-area community with a wind turbine.

The village board recently approved construction of a 15-foot-tall meteorological testing tower, which, in a $60,000 study over 12 months, will be used to determine whether there's enough wind in the area to make construction of a wind turbine worthwhile.

Keeneyville School District 20 masterminded the project, and officials are saying a wind turbine would save the district $8 million over its predicted 30-year lifespan.

Taxpayers won't have to part with a dime, but they will have to look at the environmentally friendly machine, which could tower 300 feet in the air.

It's hardly a certainty.

Trustees say they'll evaluate the data as it comes in. A final decision is still more than a year off.
