Juried art exhibit to hold winners' reception

Vicinity 2007, a juried art exhibition on display, will have a reception for the artists and award winners from 2 to 4 p.m. today at the Norris Gallery in the Norris Cultural Arts Center in St. Charles.

The show features oil, acrylic and watercolor painting; drawing; photography; printmaking; oil pastels and pastels; fiber art; sculpture; and mixed media created by 85 artists who reside within a 50-mile radius of the gallery. The public is invited and refreshments will be served.

The reception will include the presentation of Vicinity 2007 awards to five area artists selected by the show's jurors.

The winner of the $1,000 Lester J. Norris Memorial Award is Cynthia Hellyer Heinz of Warrenville for her colored pencil drawing titled "Anticipation."

Winners of $250 Awards for Excellence are Jennifer Casey of Lombard for her untitled pastel on paper; Aileen Fitzpatrick of Oswego for her fiber art quilt "Roots;" Jim Jenkins of Geneva for his mixed media sculpture "The Wait of the World;" and Roger Shule of Antioch for his mixed media work "Bits & Pieces."

Receiving honorable mention for their artworks are Pam Allnutt, Wheaton; Nick Freeman, Batavia, Richard R. Hyde, Palatine; Fran Stilwagner, Geneva; and John Webb, Rochelle.

Vicinity 2007 was juried by professional artist and art educator Anne Becker and educator and administrator Hector Munoz. Becker is the coordinator of art education in the educational studies department at Columbia College Chicago. She is currently the chairman of the St. Charles Public Arts Commission. Munoz has had an extensive career as an educator and administrator. He taught for many years at Lyons Township High School, where he was art chairman.

Vicinity 2007 will be on display at The Norris Gallery through Nov. 24. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. (The gallery will be closed Thanksgiving Day.) Admission is free.

The Norris Cultural Art Center is at 1040 Dunham Road on the Norris Campus, north of Route 64 in St. Charles.
