St. Francis High School hosts Halloween party
Rionna Atwood of Wheaton transformed herself into Hannah Montana Sunday afternoon during St. Francis High School's Halloween party.
"I like painting the pumpkin because it's fun," said the seven-year-old, wearing a blond wig and flashy headband.
Dozens of families, children and students gathered at the facility's gymnasium for games, face painting, movies, prizes, snacks and treats during the first party Wheaton's St. Francis students organized for kids from nearby low-income housing at Marian Park.
Volunteer Program Coordinator Kelsey Fox, 17, of Lisle, arranges for St. Francis students to visit Marian Park four times each week to help children with after school recreation and tutoring. Fox wore a crown as she helped kids design their candy bags Sunday afternoon.
"We've got a good turnout," she said. "I just like seeing all of our (St. Francis) students interact with the kids and form a connection with the kids."
Director of Pastoral Ministry Diane Mercadante said the event was student initiated and student planned.
"This bridges the gap between us and gives us an opportunity to get to know everyone," she said.
Jaime Valenzuela, who works in the high school's custodial department, brought his wife and three kids to the first annual event.
"It's very good," he said. "It's just fun."
