Police say men were drag-racing along Rt. 59 in Bartlett

Police have arrested two men they say were drag-racing along Route 59 in Bartlett -- including one who authorities said was under the influence at the time.

The 21-year-olds were both clocked driving nearly 80 mph in a 45-mph zone by a Bartlett police officer on routine traffic patrol around midnight Sept. 7, authorities said.

Gerardo Alvarez-Gonzalez, of 1227 King Cross in West Chicago, and Rogelio Cornelio-Mondragon, of 4750 N. Troy St. in Chicago, were each issued citations for speeding 78 mph in a 45-mph zone, drag-racing and for not having valid driver's licenses.

Police also charged Alvarez-Gonzalez with misdemeanor DUI and operation of an uninsured motor vehicle.

Cornelio-Mondragon, who drove a 1998 Chrysler Cirrus, was released on bond.

Alvarez-Gonzalez, who was driving a 1992 Ford Explorer, was released on bond and assigned an Oct. 2 court date at the DuPage County courthouse in Wheaton.
