The Batavia League of Women Voters will open its new season with a meeting at 7 p.m. today at the Batavia Public Library. The public is invited. Focus of the meeting will be on the question "Does your vote really make a difference?" The League believes that in a democracy all voters should have the opportunity to see every bill before the state Legislature in its final form at least 21 days before it is passed so voters will have time to discuss and react to the bill. The current practice of changing bills at the last minute and then rushing to pass them does not give the public a fair chance to make their wishes known. Speakers will explain why this change in policy will take an amendment to the Illinois Constitution and how that can be accomplished.

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan organization that encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government and works to increase understanding of major public policy issues and to influence public policy through education and advocacy. The League welcomes men and women members. Visit the Web site at www.1wvbatavia.org or call (630) 879-1539 for information.
