Briefs: Contest deadline extended
Naperville Park District has extended the deadline for "The Love for Three Oranges" program cover contest to Dec. 20. Young artists ages 5-13 are encouraged to submit original artwork that could be featured on the cover of the performance program. The show will be performed Jan. 24. Basketball to help needy students
When Benedictine University's men's basketball team entertains North Central College at 7 p.m. Dec. 15 in the Dan and Ada Rice Center on campus, 5700 College Road, Lisle, there will be more at stake than just local bragging rights. The Benedictine University Athletic Department plans to donate the gate receipts to the university's Textbook Program, a fund established to help needy students afford the high cost of college textbooks. Admission to the game is free to Lisle residents, but donations to the textbook program will be accepted.
Red-light cameras in Lombard
Lombard is moving forward with plans to install red-light enforcement cameras at two intersections. The village has submitted paperwork to the state and is awaiting authorization which is expected in the next two months, police officials said. Officials hope the cameras, which will catch motorists driving through red lights, will reduce accidents.
Glendale Heights police accredited
After four years of effort, the Glendale Heights Police Department was recognized by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. The achievement means the department demonstrated it follows internationally-accepted best practices in the profession. Glendale Heights was required to meet 345 standards and additionally proved it met an additional 65 non-mandatory standards. There are 18,500 agencies eligible to apply for accreditation and more than 700 have achieved it.
