Glenbard West falls to Red Devils on tiebreaker
Neither Glenbard West boys golf coach Paul Hezlett nor Hinsdale Central's Jess Krueger walked away from Carillon Golf Course in Plainfield surprised at the outcome of Tuesday's West Suburban Silver tournament.
The two schools each shot a team score of 289, placing them in a tie for first among the seven teams to compete.
A fifth-card tiebreaker gave the tournament victory to Hinsdale Central, as the Red Devils' Brett Tom Fohrde shot a 75 to eclipse Glenbard West's fifth-card 78.
"The kids were hitting greens and getting them to stay," Krueger said. "Watching the first half-dozen holes there was quite a bit of good scoring.
"We've been close with Glenbard now two years in a row. We were only 2 strokes apart last year, and this year we're even closer."
Hinsdale Central sophomore Theo Lederhausen took home medalist honors for the tournament, rifling a 5-under 67 to edge the Hilltoppers' Shane Bryant by 2 strokes.
Lederhausen took advantage of Carillon's par-5s, holing two birdies and an eagle to fuel his 67. Pressure mounted as his round continued, yet Lederhausen kept his cool and avoided mistakes down the stretch.
"At the end I was leaving some putts short. I was just trying to not 3-putt," he said. "You start to think about it at the end, and you just have to remind yourself to keep focusing on the next shot."
The Hilltoppers claimed the dual title for the tournament, and according to Hezlett will use Tuesday as a springboard for next week's regionals.
"I'm real proud of our guys," Hezlett said. "It was fun today to kind of come down to the wire to tie (Hinsdale Central) at 289, and then to get to a fifth card, we're right there with them.
"I think it's a good confidence builder for our guys as we go into the state series next week."
Likewise, Downers Grove North hopes to use its fourth-place finish as extra incentive come playoffs.
"I think they're a little disappointed," Trojans coach Jeff Naruszewicz said. "I hope they can use that as motivation next week when we come back to play in the regional."
Lyons Twp. used four sub-80 rounds to propel itself to a third-place 309, narrowly edging Downers Grove North by 2 strokes. York, Oak Park-River Forest and Proviso West followed Downers Grove North to round out the bottom half of the tournament.
