Holiday warning for drivers
The American Society of Safety Engineers in Des Plaines reminded drivers Wednesday to wear seat belts and properly secure children in vehicles, be alert, avoid distractions, drive carefully in work zones and adjust adequately for bad weather. Driving safely is especially important since the number one cause of on-the-job deaths in the U.S. continues to be transportation incidents. The 98-year-old group, which has 32,000 members, said that in 2005 in the U.S., more than 6 million vehicle crashes resulted in the deaths of 43,443 people, injured 2.7 million more people and cost the country $230.6 billion. The majority of those killed in crashes were drivers, and 75 percent of those who died were male. Worldwide, roadway crashes and fatalities are at an all-time high.
