Briefs: 2 face solicitation charges
Two Aurora men were charged Monday with soliciting sexual favors from an undercover Aurora police officer, authorities said Tuesday. Hector M. Reyes-Franco, 23, of the 500 block of Spring Street and Arnulfo E. Lopez-Bautista, 33, of the 600 block of Galena Boulevard, were arrested near Lincoln Avenue and Downer Place and Hill and Benton avenues, respectively, police said. Police towed and impounded the men's vehicles. In order to retrieve them, the men had to pay $500 plus applicable towing and storage costs.
Hunt for Lilly continues
Naperville police are continuing to investigate the Sept. 24 theft of a van containing a family dog. The dog, a 13-year-old black Labrador retriever named Lilly, has arthritis and has trouble walking. Police on Tuesday said they fear Lilly may now be in need of significant medical attention. The stolen van is described as a dark green 2001 Chevrolet Venture with Illinois registration 5203280. The vehicle last was seen going east in the 200 block of East Ogden Avenue being driven by a woman about 25 years old with a thin build, blonde hair and wearing a light-colored top, shorts, gym shoes and dark-rimmed spectacles that may have been sunglasses. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (630) 420-6006. A reward of up to $1,000 is being offered.
Liquor sting nabs two
Investigators from the Aurora Police Department's Special Operations Group, with assistance from several of the department's cadets, staged an undercover operation last week, to check compliance with laws concerning the sale of alcoholic beverages. The operation consisted of the police cadets, who are all under the legal drinking age, attempting to buy liquor at a total of 11 package good stores, restaurants and taverns. The businesses found in violation were The Foundry in the 0-99 block of Executive Drive and Tia Wannas in the 2100 block of W. Galena Blvd. Employees of the establishments were charged with unlawful sale of alcohol to a minor and served with notices to appear in court.
Carol Stream fire
The Carol Stream Fire Protection District is investigating a car fire that left a van and nearby building with roughly $50,000 in damage around 2:25 p.m. Monday. No one was inside the van, but a firefighter sustained minor injuries that were treated at the scene. Firefighters responded to a 911 call reporting the vehicle fire near Peacock Engineering, 720 Center, Carol Stream. Upon arrival, they found the van in flames, parked near an overhead door outside the building's northwest corner. Officials say the blaze was quickly extinguished and damage was limited to the van and overhead bay door. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but reports say nothing criminal is suspected.
Lane closures extended
Lane closures related to resurfacing of Naper Boulevard between Ogden Avenue and Chicago Avenue in Naperville are being extended through Friday, Oct. 10. Traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Motorists are advised to take alternate routes to avoid delays. Visit naperville.il.us for more information.
