Briefs: Dist. 300 drivers vote on union
Bus drivers and other transportation employees in Community Unit District 300 are scheduled to vote today on whether to unionize. Drivers will be able to choose the Teamsters or the Illinois Education Association, which are both competing to represent the employees. Drivers will also be able to vote for no union. The Illinois Education Association and Durham School Services, the contractor that buses District 300 students, have not yet reached an agreement. The sides started negotiating about four months ago.
Iraq war panel discussion
The Elgin Community College Peace and Justice Group, a student club that explores issues of war, peace and justice, is sponsoring two panel discussions about the Iraq war on Wednesday, Oct. 29, at ECC. The discussions, featuring members of the Chicago chapter of Iraq Veterans Against the War, will be held at 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. in the Student Resource Center Community Room on the main campus, 1700 Spartan Drive. Both events are free and open to the public. Guests are asked to bring an item that will be sent overseas to soldiers. Iraq Veterans Against the War is a national organization composed of Iraq war veterans that provide a voice to active duty service people and veterans who are against the war, but cannot express their opinions. The organization advocates an immediate withdrawal of all occupying forces in Iraq; reparations for the human and structural damages Iraq has suffered; and full benefits, adequate health care (including mental health), and other supports for returning servicemen and women. The event is co-sponsored by the ECC chapter of Amnesty International and the ECC Union of Politically Aware Students. For details, call the Student Life office at (847) 214-7370.

Intersection change
On Thursday, Oct. 30, the intersection where Huntley Road curves to meet Boyer Road in the far west Carpentersville will be changed to a T intersection with a traffic light. There will be traffic delays as the traffic light and video detection is aligned. After the conversion to a T intersection, there will be periodic lane closures for about three weeks to complete road widening. No lane closures will occur overnight or on weekends.
