Jacobs knocks off Chargers
It took Jacobs awhile, but once the Golden Eagles got going, the goals came pretty quickly. Brian Obmalay had 2 goals and an assist as Jacobs scored 3 times in less than 30 minutes and closed out the regular season by defeating Dundee-Crown, 3-1, in a boys soccer game at D-C Tuesday.
Obmalay scored twice in the first half as the Eagles took a 2-0 lead en route to the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division win.
"I thought we possessed it well," said Jacobs coach Jim Dzialo. "We didn't possess it the first 10 minutes. But after that we settled down and calmed the game down.
"Once we got the lead, we're tough to beat in that situation, because we can knock it around a little bit."
Obmalay gave Jacobs (10-7-4) the lead on a pretty goal just past the midway point of the first half. Luis Cabral took a corner kick and tapped it in to Mark Kyzska. Kyszka ran in on Charger goalkeeper Eddie Fuentes, then fired a cross to Obmalay waiting on the opposite side of the goal. Obmalay rifled a shot back to the far side of the net.
Ten minutes later it was more acrobatics. Eddie McKee lofted a header to Obmalay positioned right in front of the net. Obmalay headed it into the top of the net.
The Eagles added an insurance goal early in the second half.
Obmalay ran up the sideline, then centered to Cabral, who fired it in from 10 yards out.
The Chargers (9-13, 6-4) finally got on the board on a great individual effort by Jose Batres. He fired three shots from point-blank range, finally getting the third one past Jacobs keeper Danny Trevor to make it 3-1 with 27:38 to play.
"It's tough to win when you dig yourself a 2-0 hole," said Charger coach Rey Vargas.
