Briefs: Recycling, shredding event set

The village of Schaumburg and Schaumburg Township Elementary District 54 are co-hosting a communitywide electronic recycling, paper shredding, CFL light bulb pickup event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13 at the District 54 offices, 524 E. Schaumburg Road in Schaumburg. Accepted items include most computer and electronic equipment. Unacceptable items, though, include TVs, microwaves, appliances, air conditioners, water heaters, refrigerators, ovens, garbage disposals, fire extinguishers, household hazardous waste and regular garbage. Tailgate times three

Come Sunday, it's probable the Bears, the Cubs and the Sox will all be in first place, which calls for a major party. The Dollars for Scholars fundraiser will start at 11:30 a.m. at Trackside Restaurant, at Euclid and Wilke. Sports fans will be able to watch all three Chicago teams play on several big screen TV, plus participate in a baggo tournament, drawings, pools, giveaways and a cash bar. Streamwood to receive grant

Sen. Dick Durbin's office Thursday announced that the village of Streamwood was among the Illinois recipients of a federal Department of Justice grant to improve safety and security at schools. The village received $473,700, more than any other Illinois municipality, including the city of Chicago. Streamwood police officials Thursday said they could not yet comment on receiving the grant as they hadn't been officially notified of it.

Fifer, soldier honored Sunday

The service of Revolutionary War veteran Pvt. Eli Skinner will be honored with a grave rededication at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, at Elk Grove Cemetery, at Arlington Heights Road and I-90. Skinner enlisted at age 14 and was a fifer and soldier who came to Elk Grove in 1848 at age 88. The family homestead was located near Algonquin and Arlington Heights roads. Considered one of the "first European settlers" of the area, he is one of only two proven Revolutionary War veterans buried in Cook County. Aaron Miner, another Revolutionary War veteran, also is buried in the Elk Grove Cemetery.
