Mexican ballet to celebrate 25 years with performance

Aurora's largest nationally recognized dance troupe will celebrate its 25th anniversary Saturday and everyone is invited to the festivities.

Ballet Folklorico Quetzalcoatl will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Paramount Theatre, 23 E. Galena Blvd., Aurora.

The ballet is one of the best examples of Mexican tradition and art in the United States, said Paramount Director Diana Martinez.

"The costumes are so exquisite and are all made in Mexico for the performances," Martinez said. "And the amazing choreography and music allows them to tell traditional stories of the history of Mexico through dance."

Carlos Nunez, assistant director of the ballet, said the special anniversary show also will feature Mexican award-winning singer Goyo Cruz.

"At the Paramount, we will present dancers from all over the country of Mexico to perform more than 16 dances created to represent people, culture and tradition of Mexico," Nunez said. "Most of these dances are still danced in the smaller towns of Mexico today."

The troupe, which has more than 50 members, is also divided in generations.

"We have the younger generation, ages 6 through 12, to keep the future bright," Nunez said. "But we bring the older generation, ages 27 to 36, to help us remember the good old days."

Tickets are $22 for adults, $15 for children and will be available at the Paramount box office until show time Saturday.

Martinez warned against waiting until the last minute, however.

"We always have tickets available on (the) day of, but I would warn you to get there early," she said. "A lot of folks wait until the last minute and tickets run out."
