Elgin Genealogical Society: On Thursday, Sept. 18, the Elgin Genealogical Society will meet at the Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. After a short business report, Ginger Frere will present her program "Mining the National Archives." What's in the archives that can't be found online? This session will explore some of the known holdings of the National Archives. Ginger Frere has been involved in family history for the past 15 years. She is the principal of Information Diggers, providing a variety of research services. Learn about the ways you can find and access these genealogical gold mines. Guests are welcome. Prairie State LIFE organ club: The Prairie State LIFE club meets once a month. Meetings have been on the third Thursday and are being changed to the third Saturday of the month at the Huntley location. The last September meeting will still begin at 11:30 a.m. on the third Thursday, Sept. 18. The Saturday meetings will begin at 11 a.m. Oct. 18. The LIFE clubs are for adult music lovers and feature programs, concerts and workshops for Lowrey organ players along with good friendships. Friends of the Fox River: On Saturday, Sept. 20, the Friends of the Fox River IS hosting "It's Our River Day!" river cleanups at the watershed locations: John J. Duerr Forest Preserve, off Route 31 in South Elgin from 9 a.m. to noon; and Fox River Shores Forest Preserve in Carpentersville from 8 to 11 a.m. All are welcome to collect trash and beautify the shores and waters of the Fox River. Dundee Township Historical Society: The Dundee Township Historical Society will present its historic housewalk from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 20.

Five houses and four gardens will be featured on the walk. The homes include a "Colonial Cottage" (1922), a Greek Revival (circa 1850s), a charming home of brick and stone (1949), a grand Victorian (1890) and a home reminiscent of the English countryside (1928). The four beautiful gardens are individual and unique in design.

Advance tickets are available at Family Pride Cleaners, 537 S. Eighth St., Route 31 and at the museum, 426 Highland in West Dundee from 9 a.m. to noon on the day of the walk.

Tickets are $15 for the walk and $15 for the luncheon at the "Riverside Cafe" in Carpentersville. Picnic baskets and blankets will be available for those wishing to have their lunch on the east bank of the Fox River. For information, call the museum at (847) 428-6996.

CAGG-N: The ComputerAssisted Genealogy Group of Northern Illinois meetings are held at 10:30 a.m. on the third Saturday of each month at the Schaumburg Township District Library,130 S. Roselle Road, Schaumburg. The subject on Sept. 20 will be "Who Stole My Newspaper: Chicago Newspaper Research." Moderator is Dan Niemiec.

Ed Udovic, a professor at DePaul University and a local expert on eBay, will help you learn how the best known online marketplace presents unparalleled opportunities for genealogists to find items that bring color to your family's story. Women in Management: McHenry County Women in Management will hold two mum sales to benefit its scholarship program. The sales will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20 in the parking lot of Althoff & Associates, 4103 W. Crystal Lake Road in McHenry and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27 in left-side parking lot of Crystal Lake University Center, 100 S. Main St., Crystal Lake.

The potted mums are furnished by Countryside Garden Center, Crystal Lake. Proceeds support WIM's annual college scholarships for local women.

Elgin VFW Men's Auxiliary: The Elgin Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1307 Men's Auxiliary will host an all-you-can-eat breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 21. Advance tickets are $5 for adults. Tickets at the door are $6 for adults or $4 for children, age 12 and younger. The VFW is at 1601 Weld Road, between McLean Boulevard and Randall Road on Elgin's west side. Advance ticket sales end at noon Saturday, Sept. 20.

Jewish Genealogical Society: The Jewish Genealogical Society of Illinois welcomes Stephen Morse. He will discuss how to use his "One-Step Web Pages: A Potpourri of Genealogical Search Tools" and "One-Step Web Pages: A Hodgepodge of Lesser Known Gems" at 1 p.m. Sept. 21 at Temple Beth Israel, 3601 W. Dempster St., Skokie. This program is free to members of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Illinois. There will be a $10 charge to nonmembers (which will apply to JGSI membership when you join by Oct. JGSI has an extensive genealogical reference collection, and can provide you with a list of useful Web sites. If you are a beginner and need help getting started, members can assist you. Mothers & More: Mothers & More of McHenry County welcomes you to join us for a fun Open House night. We'll be meeting from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29 at the Crystal Lake Panera Bread, 6000 Northwest Hwy. The group provides a wide variety of monthly programs to support the many interests and needs of mothers as individuals. In the group, women share experiences and develop friendships through social, informational and outreach programs, as well as events that include their children/families. Join the group for refreshments, a door prize drawing and a fun night out.

Mothers & More of McHenry County welcomes Sara Ryerson, a therapist and Licensed Clinical Social Worker, to present some of the latest research and lead a discussion about making intimacy more than just something on your "to do" list.
