Looking for Lincoln
The following places have items and/or buildings related to Lincoln, his family or the Civil War:
• Aurora Historical Society, 20 E. Downer Place, has a letter Lincoln wrote to law client Charles Hoyt, an Aurora businessman. Copies of the letter may be viewed. (630) 906-0650.
• Batavia Depot Museum, 155 Houston St., has the dresser and bed Mary Todd Lincoln used when she was confined to Bellevue Place sanitarium. (630) 405-5274.
• Bellevue Place sanitarium, which has been converted to apartments, still stands at 333 S. Jefferson St., Batavia.
• Benedictine University Library, 5700 College Road, Lisle, has a number of Lincoln-related items, including a copy of a New York newspaper printed the day Lincoln died, a photo album of Lincoln and Civil War generals, and a chain from a train that took the newly elected president to Washington, D.C. It also has pictorial biographies of Lincoln done by American artist Bernhardt Wall. (630) 829-6090.
• The home of Capt. Marcellus E. Jones of the 8th Illinois Calvary, who fired the first shot at the Battle of Gettysburg, stands at 221 E. Illinois St., Wheaton. The house originally stood at Naperville and Indiana streets and was moved to its current location by the law firm of Peregrine, Stime, Newman, Ritzman & Bruckner, Ltd., which now occupies it.
• The Howard House Hotel, where Mary Todd Lincoln is rumored to have stayed under an assumed name, has been converted to apartments and still stands at 123 S. Third St., St. Charles.
