Park district friends formed:
A new group called the Friends of West Chicago Parks Foundation was created this month. Elected officers are Gary Major, president; Juan Chavez, vice president; Jane Hodgkinson, secretary; and Richard Worzala, treasurer. Other board members are Frank Lenertz, Michael Guttman and Michael Williams. The board adopted a mission statement that says the foundation aims to support the park district's long-term plans by seeking additional resources to accomplish its goals. These can include provision of scholarships, accessibility to more grant application opportunities and fundraising.
New Carol Stream restaurant:
Carol Stream's newest restaurant opened recently following a ceremony held by the Carol Stream Chamber of Commerce and the village of Carol Stream. Vangelo's Town Center Grille is at 1021 Fountain View Drive, across from Town Center at Gary Avenue and Lies Road. The restaurant is run by Tony Vassil. During the 1980s, Vassil owned Steamers in Carol Stream and he currently runs Tony's Steamers in Winfield. The opening ceremony drew more than 40 city officials and residents, including Mayor Frank Saverino Sr. and former Mayor Ross Ferraro.
Board member joins arboretum:
Dr. Stephen C. Gieser of West Chicago, a glaucoma consultant and partner in Wheaton Eye Clinic, has joined the Morton Arboretum board of trustees. The eye specialist, who first visited the arboretum in Lisle on a fifth-grade field trip, has long been a proponent of tree planting and conservation.
