Elgin Genealogical Society: The Elgin Genealogical Society will meet at 7 p.m. today (Aug. 21). Carol Blohm will present "Migratory Trails Across America." Due to library construction, this meeting will be at the Elgin Area Historical Museum, 360 Park St. in Elgin. Guests and new members are welcome. Square Dancing Club: The Batavia Bachelors and Bachelorettes Square Dancing Club meets for the summer in the air-conditioned hall at Trinity Lutheran Church, 405 S. Rush St., Roselle. Dancing is from 8 to 10:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Fridays. Friday is the 34th anniversary dance with Tom Roper and Angie and Bob Huckeby. Tri-City VFW: The Tri-City Evergreen Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2298, 117 S. First St. in West Dundee, is hosting an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $7 or $3 for children, 5 to 12 years old. Get tickets in advance at the post.

Elgin Ladies Auxiliary to VFW Post 1307: The Elgin Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 1307 Auxiliary is involved in many activities this summer. The group is planning a farewell ceremony Saturday for deploying soldiers of the lgin Armory 1-178 Infantry B Company.

On Aug. 31, the auxiliary will co-sponsor with the Mystic Rose Dancers, "The Shimmy for the Cure" at the VFW Post 1307, 1601 Weld Road, Elgin. A buffet dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. and the show will start at 7 p.m. The profits of this fundraiser will go to Cancer Aid and Research. Reservation are required; call Donna (630) 462-6933. To help the ladies auxiliary serve our veterans past, present and future and other community organizations, call Sue at (815) 477-3322. The auxiliary welcomes new members.

Fire and Iron Firefighters Motorcycle Club: The Fire and Iron Firefighters Motorcycle Club South Elgin Station 20 will host its first fundraiser ride to benefit Williams Syndrome Association on Sunday (Aug. 24). It begins at 10 a.m. at Hoss' Roadhouse on Route 59 and Army Trail Road in Bartlett. There will be a 50/50 raffle and other prizes. Kane County Genealogical Society: The Kane County Genealogical Society will meet at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 28 in the first-floor meeting room of the Geneva History Center, 113 S. Third St., Geneva. The guest speaker for the evening will be Grace DuMelle will discuss "Uncovering Your Past in Land Records." Learn how to access a trove of public records that can provide maiden names, death dates, proof of relationships and much more. Once you know about the two types of indexing systems (tract book and grantor-grantee) you can work in any county in the U.S., including Kane, Cook, Lake, and DuPage. Specialized maps and legalese also will be deciphered.

Hampshire-Burlington Jaycees and NKEC-School's Out Community Fun: The Hampshire-Burlington Jaycees and NKEC-School's Out Community Fun are sponsoring a Labor Day Weekend 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament. The tournament will start at 9 a.m. sharp Aug. 30 at the campus of Cambridge Lakes Charter School, 880 Wester Blvd., Pingree Grove.

There will be boy and girl divisions, as well as age brackets of 8-9 years, 10-12 years, 13-14 years, 15-16, 17-19 and 20-plus. Fees range from $50 to $80 per team. Awards ceremony will take place after last game has been played.

Preregistration is required. Each team must consist of three or four players. All teams must fill out a registration and waiver form. All forms and fees must be delivered to Northern Kane Educational Corp., 880 Wester Blvd., Pingree Grove, IL 60140 by Aug. 23.

Elgin Woman's Club: The Elgin Woman's Club will open its 2008-09 season with its first meeting and program of the year at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 2 at Hennessy's Steak & Seafood Restaurant, 2300 Bushwood Drive, Elgin.

The program, "Heritage Today: A Look at Elgin's Future with the Past" will be presented by Bill Briska, a retired administrator at the Elgin Mental Health Center. He has been a resident of city of Elgin since 1980 and currently is the treasurer of the Elgin Area Historical Society and chairman of the City of Elgin Heritage Commission. He has written two books on aspects of local history - "The History of Elgin Mental Health Center: Evolution of a State Hospital" and "Elgin Time: A History of the Elgin National Watch Company 1864 to 1967." The later work was co-authored with Mike Alft.

Briska will discuss Elgin's long and rich history which distinguishes it from many other suburban communities and how it makes the city unique. He will also discuss the status of historic preservation in Elgin and what role history plays. He also will talk about where the preservation community is headed.

Cost for the luncheon is $20, payable by check at the door the day of the meeting. Members are asked to make reservations no later than Wednesday, Aug. 27 by calling the EWC hotline at (847) 622-3614. The club meets monthly from September to May at local restaurants for luncheon meetings and programs. Zonta Club: Longing for a younger look? Interested in getting rid of those lines, wrinkles, sags and not so slender areas? Looking for some fellowship and network opportunities with professional women in your community? The Zonta Club of St. Charles-Geneva-Batavia presents an evening with Dr. Jennifer Hein of the Women's Institute of Cosmetic Surgery and Laser Surgery. Learn about the benefits of cosmetic enhancement. The club meets the first Tuesday of each month at Prairie Landing Golf Course in West Chicago. Barrington/Northwest Community Associates: Men and women throughout the northwest suburbs who have an appreciation of art and an interest in art-related subjects are invited to attend the annual Fall Membership Tea sponsored by the Barrington/Northwest Community Associates. The tea will take place on Thursday, Sept. 4 at the Presbyterian Church of Barrington, 6 S. South Brinker Road. Tea is at 1 p.m. with program at 1:30 p.m.

Registration is not required; members and guests are welcome. There is no fee.

This event is to welcome returning members and to greet newcomers and present the itinerary for the upcoming season. The tea begins at 1 p.m. with assorted condiments, tea/coffee and is followed by a wonderful program.

James Wood, instructor at the Art Institute, will address common queries about artists and the art world. Board Chair Carole Bulakowski will explain the 2008-09 itinerary which includes several outstanding excursions and interesting local programs focusing on various aspects of art and architecture.

Welcome Club: The Welcome Club of the Fox Valley invites those with an interest in knowing more about the area to attend the general meeting and monthly program at 7 p.m. Sept. 8 at the Fox Valley Presbyterian Church, 227 East Side Drive in Geneva.

Mickey Miller, administrator of Elderday Center in Batavia, and Kally Klose, a board member and volunteer, will be special guests. They will share the details of their dedication and love, that have helped them to keep the facility open for the last 10 years, and inspire attendees on how they, too, can be of help.

In addition to the program, new residents to the area and new club members are encouraged to come to meet all the board members and learn more about the club and the special interest groups coordinated by members.

Various volunteer activities chairwomen will be there, with signup sheets, and be ready to answer your questions.

Club activities include breakfast, lunch, and dinner outings; group games such as Bunco, bridge, mah jongg, pinochle, tile rummy, Mexican train dominoes and Scrabble; Lifetstories, a memoir group, mini-book groups, movie and theater outings; a sewing group; a walking group; a special singles group; an end-of-year picnic; informal dinner parties; and more. New activities and interests groups are added frequently by members. Enjoy an evening of seeing old friends, meeting new ones, and making plans for a fun-filled year.

The Welcome Club of the Fox Valley is a social and philanthropic organization for women in the area who are interested in meeting and making new friends through various social and fundraising activities.

Many members reside in areas around the Fox Valley, including Aurora, Batavia, Bartlett, Elburn, Elgin, Geneva, Lily Lake, Maple Park, North Aurora, St. Charles, South Elgin, Sugar Grove and surrounding areas.

The group meets regularly September through June. Each monthly meeting includes a meet-and-greet, which kicks off the meeting, followed by a short general business meeting, an entertaining and informative program.

Past programs have included: Nutrition advice, tips on foolproof cooking, handwriting analysis, ask the attorney, landscaping ideas, interior decorating, identity theft, organizing your home, updating your wardrobe with recyclable or vintage items, crime prevention strategies and more.

The annual membership fee of $25 provides you with a membership directory and a monthly newsletter that recaps the upcoming monthly events and activities.

Henpeck Unit: The Spoon River/Bishop Hill tour takes on Oct. 4. Guests are welcome at any AHCE activity.

The next meeting will be on Sept. 9 at the home of Emily Sjurseth in Plato Center. Program booklets for the 2008-2009 year will be completed at this meeting.

American Needlepoint Guild: The Fox Chapter of the American Needlepoint Guild will meet at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 9 at St. John's Lutheran Church, 300 Jefferson St. in Algonquin. They will be taught "Amy's Spring Garden." For supply information, call Jan Hyser at (847) 639-2592.

Dundee Township Historical Society: The Dundee Township Historical Society museum, 426 Highland Ave., West Dundee, will host the annual house walk on Sept. 20. Several homes from different periods of the past as well as an array of beautiful gardens are being considered for the walk. This is the major fundraiser for the society and they urge the membership to support this event.
