Man arrested in Wood Dale break-in
Wood Dale police arrested a Roselle man early Monday morning after he broke into a house on the 400 block of north Edgewood Drive, where a woman was home with her three grandchildren, police said.
George M. Zulas, 35, whose last known address is 628 S. Roselle Road, has been charged with home invasion, residential burglary, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and possessing a firearm with a revoked license, according to the DuPage County state's attorney's office. He appeared in DuPage County bond court Tuesday morning and his bail was set at $500,000, police said.
Authorities said Zulas had a gun when he broke into the house about 12:49 a.m. Monday and began burglarizing the residence while the family was inside. Soon after, a male resident arrived home from work, Zulas confronted him and the men scuffled until Zulas was disarmed.
Wood Dale Deputy Police Chief Greg Vesta said the resident had no choice but to fight.
"He wasn't taking the law into his own hands," Vesta said. "He had no choice because he was walking into a room, didn't realize (Zulas) was there and it was like 'surprise!' He did whatever he had to do to protect his family."
Police responded to a 911 call while Zulas was being subdued by the resident. No major injuries were reported.
Since Zulas' firearm owner's identification card was revoked, police are investigating how he obtained the gun. They searched his vehicle, which was found in a nearby industrial park, and residence in an effort to recover additional evidence and determine events leading up to the crime.
