Woman denies theft from YMCA camp

A Lakemoor woman pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges she embezzled more than $50,000 from a YMCA camp.

Laura Weber, 38, was employed as business manager for Camp Duncan in Ingleside from November 2005 until November 2006.

Lake County Assistant State's Attorney Marykay Foy said Weber was fired after being placed on probation for stealing three $200 Costco gift cards from the organization.

An audit was ordered for the organization's books, and Lake County sheriff's detectives were called when several discrepancies were found.

An investigation showed more than $50,000 was missing, Foy said, and Weber was brought in for questioning.

Detectives said she admitted taking about $22,000 from the organization, but could not account for the balance of the missing money.

Circuit Judge George Bridges told Weber she faces up to seven years in prison. He scheduled a trial for Sept. 29.

Weber, who is free from custody on a signature bond, is due to appear in court Aug. 4.
