Mt. Prospect man admits to child rape

Mount Prospect man faces up to 60 years in prison, on top of the 12 he already is serving, after admitting in court Tuesday he repeatedly raped a boy throughout the victim's grade school years.

Gillis L. Martin, 41, pleaded guilty to two counts of predatory criminal sexual assault as part of a plea deal in which McHenry County prosecutors agreed to dismiss 11 other counts of the same offense as well as two counts of criminal sexual assault filed in December.

Under the deal, Martin, 718 Shabonee Trail, will be sentenced to six to 30 years in prison on each of the felony charges. The time on each must be served consecutively not only to each other, but also to a 12-year term he is serving on a Cook County case involving the same charge and same victim.

The charges all stem from a Woodstock Police investigation begun in November after the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services forwarded information about allegations made against Martin by a 15-year-old boy.

The investigation, authorities said, revealed that Martin had been sexually assaulting the boy starting from the time the victim was about six or seven years old and continuing until he was in the eighth grade.

"The evidence would show that the defendant told (the victim) several times not to tell anyone or else he would go to jail," Assistant McHenry County State's Attorney Ryan Blackney said Tuesday.

Blackney declined to comment on how long a prison term he would seek when Martin is sentenced Sept. 2.
