Antioch's Pottinger commits to Eastern
Lamarr Pottinger is more than familiar with Eastern Illinois University.
The recent Antioch graduate has competed at EIU's O'Brien Stadium the last two springs as a state-qualifying high hurdler.
Now he'll be going to college in downstate Charleston.
Pottinger has signed a letter of intent to participate in track and field at Eastern Illinois.
He was a three-sport athlete for the Sequoits his senior year, participating in football, basketball and track and field. He was the sectional champ in the high hurdles, and his time 14.2 at the North Suburban Conference meet broke the school record.
Skeens commits to Augie: Brianna Skeens, a three-sport standout for Vernon Hills, has decided to continue her education and athletic career at Augustana College.
She will enroll in the fall and plans on being a member of both the Viking basketball and volleyball teams.
The 5-foot-10 Skeens earned varsity letters in basketball, volleyball and track and field at Vernon Hills. As a senior she served as a team captain in all three sports and was a volleyball captain her junior year as well.
In basketball, Skeens was an honorable mention all-conference selection in the North Suburban a junior and a special mention pick as a senior. During her senior season she averaged 3.7 points and 6.5 rebounds while leading the Cougars in steals with 43 and assists with 111. She is second on the Vernon Hills career assist list with 189 and her rebound and assist totals in 2007-08 were both the second-best single season marks in school history.
In volleyball, Skeens was named all-conference and was also selected to the Daily Herald Lake County all-area team. She is Vernon Hills' career leader in hitting percentage and led the team in kills as a senior with 124. She was also second on the team with 35 blocks and had 30 digs and 20 aces as well.
In track and field, the versatile Skeens owns Vernon Hills' school records in the discus and high jump. She is a two-time state qualifier in the discus with a personal best of 124-10.
Legion baseball
Gurnee wins opener: Mike McCann hit a walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Gurnee's American Legion team to a season-opening 2-1 over Grayslake on Wednesday.
D.J. Schaefer pitched a complete game for the win, striking out five. He also went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double.
Zummo tosses no-no for LZ: Dan Zummo pitched a 6-inning no-hitter for Lake Zurich Post 964 in its season opener last Thursday as part of the Elgin Early Bird Tournament.
Lake Zurich defeated Plainfield 11-1, with Austin Schmeisser and Brock Simon leading the way offensively. Schmeisser went 3-for-4 with 2 doubles, while Simon was 3-for-3 with a double and stolen base.
Zummo struck out five and walked three.
Lake Zurich improved to 2-0 last Friday with an 8-3 win over Crystal Lake. Steve Cleary pitched the first 4 innings for the win, striking out four and allowing 2 runs (1 earned). Ryan Morrill finished up with 3 innings on the mound for the save.
Ryan Baranowski hit a 2-run homer, while Schmeisser was 3-for-4 again with another double. Florida Marlins draft pick Joey DeBernardis went 2-for-4 with 2 doubles.
On Saturday, Lake Zurich scored 3 runs in the top of the seventh to defeat Elmhurst 4-1. Morrill earned his second save in as many days. The winners got 2 hits apiece from Scott Stratton and Robert Brant.
Jeff Moree allowed 4 hits over 6 innings for the win.
