Criminal charges possible in crash
A 22-year-old Harvard man died and a Huntley couple suffered minor injuries Sunday in a Crystal Lake crash that has authorities exploring possible criminal charges.
Motorcyclist Rafael Fernandez was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which occurred about 6:26 p.m. at Route 14 and Andrea Lane, just east of McHenry County College.
McHenry County Sheriff's police said Fernandez was westbound on Route 14 when a car driven by Eugene A. Rothbert of Huntley attempted to make a left turn onto the highway from Andrea Lane. The car pulled into the path of Fernandez's motorcycle, causing the collision.
Rothbert, 76, and passenger Mary A. Rothbert, 73, were taken from the scene to Centegra Memorial Medical Center in Woodstock. Both were treated and later released.
Sheriff's Sgt. Karen Groves said investigators will await toxicology results from both Rothbert and Fernandez before deciding what charges to file. The testing may not be complete for up to two months.
Both Rothberts were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash and Fernandez was wearing a helmet, authorities said.
