Briefs: Police call death a suicide

Police say a 74-year-old Streamwood man apparently hanged himself near the Poplar Creek bike trail close to the northwest corner of Bartlett and Schaumburg roads in Streamwood. Late Monday morning, police were called to the scene after two bicyclists on the trail discovered the man's body. The Cook County medical examiner's office determined the cause of death to be suicide.

Dachshund rescue benefit

The Suburban Chicagoland Dachshund Lovers will put on Dachstravaganza, a garage sale in Palatine benefiting the Midwest Dachshund Rescue. The fundraiser takes place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 9 a.m. to noon Sunday. The garage sale will be located at 304 Cheryl Lane in Palatine's Pleasant Hill subdivision. Recycling benefits pantry

Proceeds from a new Maine Township recycling program will go to the township's Emergency Food Pantry. The township has partnered with AbitibiBowater Paper Retriever to collect paper goods in a bin at town hall, 1700 Ballard Road, Park Ridge. Acceptable materials area newspapers, magazines, catalogs, mail, envelopes, folders, fax and copy paper, colored paper and shredded paper in paper bags. Wheeling hires firefighters

Wheeling will be hiring three new firefighters thanks to a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The $316,275 grant will cover three firefighters for five years. The new employees will start on Aug. 4.
