Briefs: New Geneva administrator

The Geneva school board this week hired Donna Oberg as the district's new assistant superintendent for business services. She will begin July 1 and be responsible for overseeing the district's finances and facilities as well as the transportation and food service departments. Oberg is currently assistant business manager for St. Charles public schools. She will replace Rebecca Allard, who is taking a similar job in Palatine.

Carriage rides for Dad

Can't decide which tie to buy for Father's Day? Change things up on Sunday and take Dad out on a horse-drawn carriage. Blackberry Farm, 100 S. Barnes Road in Aurora, will offer free carriage rides with paid admission to the farm from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Rates are $3.75 for resident children and seniors and $4.25 for resident adults. Nonresident children and seniors pay $6 and adults pay $7. The farm will also have silversmith demonstrations, a band from 2 to 2:50 p.m. and antique tractor displays. Call (630) 892-1550.

Support meeting offered

The DuPage County chapter of Parents Of Murdered Children monthly meeting is scheduled for 6 to 8 tonight in Wheaton. The speaker is Suzanne W. Keenon of the Fox Valley Institute. She will talk about the grieving process and couples' grief. The POMC group regularly meets the second Thursday of each month in the DuPage County state's attorney's office at 503 N. County Farm Road, off Manchester Road, in Wheaton. It is open to any Illinois resident 18 or older who has lost someone they love to violence. For details, call Terrie Jacoby at (630) 407-8008.

Moratorium extended

The Elburn village board earlier this month extended the temporary moratorium on new banks establishing themselves in Elburn for another three months to Aug. 26. The village is conducting a study on the potential long-term effects of banks in Elburn. Bank properties don't provide property tax revenue for the village.

Give blood from noon to 4 p.m. Friday at Delnor-Community Hospital, 300 Randall Road, Geneva. Donors will receive a gift card for a free quart of Oberweis ice cream. Songwriting contest

The Art in Your Ear songwriting contest is open for entries. The contest, held in conjunction with Batavia's Art in Your Eye festival, has categories for pop/rock, country, folk/protest, hip hop/rap and Christian/inspirational songs. Winners will get prizes and a chance to perform at the festival. Applications are $20 and available online at www.artinyourear.com. They need to be postmarked by July 15. Entries are judged solely on songwriting.

Junior golf tournament

The 2008 St. Charles Junior Golf Tournament is planned for July 16 and 17 at Pottawatomie Park, 8 North Ave. The 36-hole competition, sponsored by Klinkey Heating and Sheet Metal, is open to children 12 to 17 who have a St. Charles mailing address, live in the St. Charles Park District or have a season park pass. The deadline to register is 8 p.m. July 12. The entry fee is $26. Call (630) 584-8356.
