'Guitar Hero' tourney axed
The Barrington Area Special Voices "Guitar Hero" tournament fundraiser planned for next month has been canceled, organizers said. The fundraiser was scheduled to be the official kickoff of Barrington Area Special Voices, which several parents are establishing to provide support and advocacy for the area's special-needs children and their families. Organizers said the event was canceled after permit problems arose. They hope to reschedule it for later this summer. For more information on the organization, visit baspecialvoices.org.
Police relax parking rules
Mount Prospect police will suspend the village's overnight parking ordinance from 2 a.m. July 2 to 2 a.m. July 7. The ordinance bans parking on village streets from 2 to 6 a.m. Ordinarily, residents must request overnight parking permission from the police, but enforcement is being relaxed because police usually get a large number of requests for overnight parking permission during this time. The ordinance will resume at 2 a.m. July 7.

Wind damages building
Schaumburg police said thunderstorm winds caused a portion of the old Homemakers Furniture Building at 1733 E. Woodfield Road to cave in Saturday. Police officials said a freestanding wall that hadn't been demolished yet blew over. No one was injured or on site when the collapse took place. Officials said portions of Martindale Road were shut down after the collapse while a demolition company inspected the wreckage. The road was reopened in about 30 minutes, officials said. The demolition crew that has been taking down the empty store since June 20 cleaned up the debris Saturday night and Sunday morning.
