Drivers beware

Starting today and running through July 6, Schaumburg police will conduct stepped-up enforcement of seat belt, speeding and drunken driving laws. Officers working this detail will be paid overtime from an IDOT grant, in conjunction with the national "You Drink & Drive, You Lose" campaign. The areas chosen for this selective enforcement are the major intersections along Golf, Higgins and Martingale roads as well as the area in and around Streets of Woodfield shopping center at 600 Martingale Road. Many other area communities also have received similar grants for extra enforcement during around the July 4 holiday.

Wheeling TIF hearings OK'd

The Wheeling village board will hold hearings for the expansion and creation of new tax increment financing districts. A public hearing on the expansion of the north TIF, around Milwaukee Avenue and Lake-Cook Road, will begin at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 18 at village hall, 255 W. Dundee Road. A joint review board meeting also will discuss the TIF expansion at 4 p.m. July 7 at village hall. A public hearing on the creation of the southeast TIF, which includes Chicago Executive Airport and a surrounding industrial area, will be held at the 7:30 p.m. Aug. 18. Tired of buying gasoline?

If you're concerned about public transit in Mount Prospect, stop by what's being called a vision workshop at 7 p.m. today at the Mount Prospect Public Library, 10 S. Emerson St. The purpose is to get opinions from residents and business owners on transportation issues. Mount Prospect and the Regional Transportation Authority are looking at current level of service, usage and access to Pace and Metra, as well as evaluating bicycle routes through the village. Dachshund rescue benefit

The Suburban Chicagoland Dachshund Lovers will put on "Dachstravaganza," a garage sale in Palatine benefiting the Midwest Dachshund Rescue. The fundraiser takes place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday and 9 a.m. to noon Thursday. The garage sale is located at 304 Cheryl Lane in Palatine's Pleasant Hill subdivision.
