Briefs: Remember our veterans
Members of the Elburn American Legion and its auxiliary will be exchanging poppies for donations Friday and Saturday at various locations in Elburn. Proceeds will benefit veterans' organizations, such as USO centers at O'Hare and Midway airports.
Habitat starts project
Fox Valley Habitat for Humanity will launch its 39th volunteer-built home at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at 1338 Grand Blvd. in Aurora. The service that will start the project is open to the public. It will be led by the Rev. Jeff Marrett, executive director of the Aurora-based agency. The project is expected to take about four months with volunteers working on Thursdays and Saturdays.
East auto show returns
The St. Charles East High School Auto Club will have its 4th Annual Car, Truck and Motorcycle Show on Saturday to raise money for club projects. The show is set for 1 to 4 p.m. in East's southwest parking lot. Entry fees are $10 per vehicle for the general public and $3 for students. Cars, trucks, motorcycles, commercial vehicles and "alternative" vehicles are welcome. There also will be live music by the band All For Aspen as well as food, drinks, games and prize drawings. Battle of the bands
A teen battle of the bands is scheduled for 7 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday at Pottawatomie Community Center, 8 North Ave., St. Charles. The event is for teenagers in sixth through 12th grades. Admission is $5. The scheduled bands are Yellow Jello Solution, Rocket Boots, Right For Avengence, 90 Pieces and All For Aspen. Charity house walk set
The Private Bank and Trust Co. and the Daily Herald are sponsoring the "Trading Ideas Remodeled Home Tour" from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. This benefit showcases five remodeled homes from the Tri-Cities. The event benefits Mid-Valley Neighborhood Improvements Association's Emergency Home Repair Fund, which helps limited-income residents with home repairs. Tickets are $10. VFW plans charity 'prom'
The St. Charles Veterans of Foreign Wars will host a Prom for All Generations Saturday to raise money for the local Salvation Army. The event includes dinner, dancing and a charity auction. Tickets are $27.50 a person or $50 a couple. Proceeds help pay for meals for senior citizens. The party, designed to be similar to a high school prom, is planned for 5:30 to 10 p.m. at the VFW hall, 119 N. Third St. For reservation, call (630) 232-6676.
Road work under way
Road work will continue through May 23 on New York Street from River Street to the Fox River Bridge in Aurora. The work will include lane closures, but at least one lane of through traffic will be maintained. The city is asking motorists to use other routes if possible. The work is weather-dependent.
