Bartlett 7, Streamwood 0

Bartlett pitcher Mike Derby took the mound lacking something important Tuesday afternoon.

"In the bullpen, I could see the fastball was not working," said Derby, a left-handed senior.

A bit arm weary on the heels of 5 tense innings last Thursday in a 2-1 loss to league-leading St. Charles North, Derby took to the mound planning to deceive, not overpower.

Relying more on his craftiness, Derby kept Streamwood hitters guessing for 6 innings of 1-hit baseball, and Hawks hitters connected against Sabres starter Mike Diebold for 5 hits in a 6-run third inning to back Derby to a 7-0 Upstate Eight Conference victory.

"The off-speed and everything was working," Derby said. "I didn't have a fastball, but I made up for it by throwing all off speed and trying to keep them off balance."

The win was Bartlett's third straight, improving its record to 8-5, 7-4 in the UEC.

"We've got the (Class 4A) seeding meeting next week, so we want to carry something good into that," Bartlett coach Rocco Marinucci said. "The kids have been playing up, and that's good. We've had one little flat spot in our season and, other than that, we've been playing good baseball."

Streamwood coach Steve Diversey was frustrated by the inability of the Sabres (4-13, 2-6) to put the ball in play. In four innings between the second and fifth, Derby (4-1) recorded 10 of 12 outs via the strikeout. Bartlett reliever Kevin Carmody struck out 2 more hitters in a scoreless seventh.

"Twelve strikeouts and 2 walks and, what, maybe 1 hit if we're lucky? You can't win a ballgame," Diversey said. We're supposed to be getting better. Right now, I don't know, we're just slumping offensively. If you can't score runs, you can't win. That's the bottom line."

Diebold (1-4) held the Hawks scoreless on 1 hit through 2 innings, but gave up 4 singles to the first 5 hitters he faced in the third, including RBI basehits by Geroge Tintera, Ryan Walker and Ryan Schrader that staked Bartlett to a 3-0 lead.

With Schrader on second with two outs and Derby --who homered against Streamwood on Monday -- at the plate, Diversey ordered an intentional walk to set up a force play against a right-handed hitter.

Instead, Diebold fell behind in the count 3-1 to Bartlett No. 5 hitter Mike Selvaggi, and the senior crushed a rising line drive well over the left-field fence for a 3-run home run and a 6-0 Hawks lead.

"It kind of made me upset," Selvaggi said of the intentional walk to get to him. "I need something like that to fire me up. The pitcher fell behind and he threw a fastball down the middle and I just hit it. It made me feel good."

Neuqua Valley 11, Elgin 1: Unable to generate much offense, Elgin (3-8, 3-7) dropped this Upstate Eight Conference meeting 11-1 in five innings. Isaac Serna (0-2) was on the mound for the loss allowing 6 runs on 6 hits while striking out three in three innings of work. Dan Schmerber had a double for the Maroons and scored the only run.

Dundee-Crown 15, Schaumburg 12: Every hit counted in this 15-12 nonconference win for Dundee-Crown (8-5), which entered the bottom of the sixth inning trailing 11-9. A 6-run sixth turned things around, and leading that offensive barrage were Willie Larsen (4-for-5, 2 RBI), Ryan Horcher (2-for-3, 3 RBI), Dan Kilchenman (3-for-4, 4 RBI), Logan Kissack (2-for-4, RBI) and Ben Rodriguez (2-for-4, RBI).

Bill Peterson earned the win in relief allowing 1 earned run on 3 hits in ¿ of an inning.

St. Charles North 9, Larkin 3: Despite solid plate appearances from Justin Kalusa (2-for-4), Cam Kinley (HR), Joe Stace (2b, run) and Jon Meidel (2b, run), Larkin (6-9, 5-7) dropped this Upstate Eight Conference contest.

Tyler Shore was on the hill for the loss allowing 4 runs on 6 hits with 2 strikeouts in 3½ innings pitched.

Huntley 20, Marian Central 10: Huntley (13-5) collected 18 hits while scoring 20 runs to defeat Marian Central in nonconference action. Jeremy Grap earned the win pitching 4 innings with 3 strikeouts and 1 walk. Craig Lipp led at the plate going 4-for-4 with 4 doubles and 5 RBI. Nathan Sopena (3-for-4) collected 2 doubles while Jimmy Gordon was 2-for-2 with a home run.

Benet 15, Jacobs 14: Jacobs led 11-2 after one inning. But couldn't prevent Benet from chipping away to gain the nonconference win in a game played at College of Dupage. Patton Hofer took the loss for the Golden Eagles.
