Local teens earn Evans scholarships

Crystal Lake Country Club held a celebration dinner April 5 in honor of Evans Scholarship winners Janelle Smith and Alyssa Francini. Both will receive full four-year tuition to any college with the Evans program.

Janelle, the daughter of Mike and Cynthia Smith of Lake in the Hills, has chosen Marquette University in Milwaukee.

Alyssa, the daughter of Raymond and Gretchen Fraqancini of Crystal Lake, has chosen the University of Michigan.

The Evans Scholarship program was started by Chick Evans one of golf's greatest amateurs. He directed any money he received from golf toward caddie scholarships following the first two Evans winners. The Evans scholarship program has seen 8,400 Evans Scholars graduate from college.

Evans scholarships are awarded to caddies who have a strong caddie record with a minimum of two years in a caddie program. They must have an excellent academic record, with a B average or higher in college preparatory courses, and must take the ACT. They must demonstrate a financial need and they must be of outstanding character.
