BG wins; Viator sweeps

Four pitchers got the job done in a 7-6 nonconference win for Buffalo Grove's baseball team Saturday against visiting Stevenson.

Bison coach John Wendell watched James Hurley go the first 4 innings, followed by Paul Timko (1¿ innings) and Walt Zawlocki (½ inning) and senior Andrew Diederich, who earned the win by facing three batters in the top of the seventh.

Diederich, who threw a double play ball in the inning, notched his first varsity win.

The Bison (7-6) scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.

Evan Kander led off with a walk and took second on Zach Borenstein's goundout to second.

After a walk to Mike Ricciardi, Kander was able to score the winning run when the Patriots tried to get an inning-ending double play.

The Pats got the out at second but an ensuing error allowed Kander to cross home plate for the seventh run.

The Bison were led on offense by Borenstein (3-for-4, 3 stolen bases), Matt Stadler (2-for-5, 2 RBI) and Ricciardi (2-for-3). J.P. Kulick and Kander added doubles for the winners.

"I thought the kids did a nice job to battle back from a 6-3 deficit," Wendell said. "They battled back and got 3 in the bottom of the sixth to tie it."

St. Viator sweeps St. Joseph: Eric Huber threw a 6-hitter with 4 strikeouts for a 4-1 East Suburban Catholic Conference win in Game 1.

Phil Bar (2-for-2), Nick Skala (double) and Jack Meyer (double) led the Lions.

Bryce Hensley threw a 2-hitter with 6 strikeouts to shut out the Chargers 3-0 in Game 2.

Bar (3-for-4), Huber (2-for-2) and Brett Kay (double) led the offense as the Lions (12-8) won their fourth straight.

Maine West 15, Niles W. 4: Sean Willett homered and Ryan Tuntland tripled as Maine West (9-3, 6-2) scored 6 in the first and 9 in the fourth of the 5-inning Central Suburban League crossover.

Eric Romani got the victory for the Warriors.

Schaumburg 15, Jacobs 8: Schaumburg (12-4) scored 8 runs in the sixth inning to help junior Kyle Meyer notch the win.

Dave Compitello (4-for-5, 3 runs, 2 RBI), Mike Mistrata (3-for-5, 2 home runs), George Kalousek (2-for-3, 2 doubles), Steve Mahler (2-for-2, triple), Dan Launhardt (2-for-4, triple, 4 RBI) and Alec Fontanez (2-for-4) led the Saxons to double figure runs for the ninth time. Mistrata has 5 homers.

Meadows 17, Lane Tech 7: Kevin Serna (3-for-3, 4 RBI, home run, double), Ben Sabal (4-for-5, 4 RBI, double), Ted Metzger (2-for-4, 3 RBI, double), Dan Lauria (2-for-5, RBI, double), Jon Carlson (2-for-5, 2 RBI) and Pat Conlin (2-for-3, RBI) led the Mustangs (9-4) to their seventh straight win.

Garrett Cannizzo added a double and 2 RBI. Conlin (4-2) worked an inning and picked up the win for the hosts.

Fremd 12, Warren 9: Jason Ford (2-for-4) belted 2 home runs with 5 RBI for Fremd (9-4). Ford has 6 homers this spring.

Adam Weber threw two innings of relief for the win.

Other top hitters for Fremd were Nick Addison (3-for-4, 3 runs), Anthony Concialdi (2-for-4), Tyler Gregory (2-for-4, 3 RBI, 2 doubles) and Ryan Polak (double).

Prospect 17, Lake Forest 15: The Knights (10-7) out-hit the Scouts 17-15 led by Miles Osei (3-for-5, 2 home runs), Jason Leblebijian (2-for-4, 2 RBI), Andrew Cardona (2-for-4, triple, 2 RBI), Ross Axley (2-for-4, 2 RBI), Tim Scanlan (home run) and Griffin Rebecca (double).

Scanlan's homer was his fifth. Al Lazarz got the win.

Elk Grove, Libertyville split: Libertyville won the opener 16-5 but the Grenadiers (10-9) bounced back with a 16-6 win in Game 2.

Don Duschinsky (3-for-3) led the Grenadiers in the opener with a pair of doubles.

In Game 2, Duschinsky threw 2 innings for the win.

Matt Martinski (2-for-4, 4 RBI, home run), Brian Bathauer (2-for-4, RBI, double), Kevin Miller (3-for-4, 2 RBI, double) and Chris D'Angelo (3-for-4, 2 RBI) led the Grens' offense.

Martinski's 3-run right-center field blast came in the 8-run fifth inning with Duschinsky and Miller on base.

Hersey, Zion split: ŒBobby Gehm (2-for-4, triple, 5 RBI), Mike Toljanic 2-for-2, RBI), Chris James (2-for-3, 1 double, RBI) and Matt Milligan (3-for-3, 3 runs) led the offense for host Hersey in a 13-3 win in Game 1.

Dan Kelley threw a 3-hitter with 7 strikeouts for the Huskies (9-11).

Zion won 4-0 in Game 2 as the Hersey offense was led by Gehm (2-for-4, triple) and Toljanic (2-for-4 , 1 run).

Leyden, Proviso East split: Joe Natale (2 doubles, 2 RBI) and Jack Townley (4-for-4, RBI, double) led the offense as Leyden had a 6-game West Suburban Gold winning streak snapped in a 12-11 loss in Game 1.

The Eagles posted a 13-0 shutout in Game 2 as Ricky Zapata threw a 2-hitter.

Jonathan Weaver (2-for-5, double) and Josh Serrano (2-for-2, 2 RBI, double) led Leyden (13-3, 9-2).
